The Center for Applied Transgender Studies is proud to announce the launch of its flagship journal, the Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies.

The Bulletin aims to be the leading venue for academic research on the social, cultural, and political issues facing transgender communities across the globe. With generous support from our publisher, Northwestern University Libraries, the journal offers a Platinum Open Access forum for research of all theoretical and methodological approaches oriented toward the identification, analysis, and improvement of the material conditions of transgender life. Being Platinum Open Access means the journal is entirely free to read and use, and we do not charge authors article processing charges or article submission fees.

We will publish our first issue in early 2022 and are currently accepting manuscripts through our submission portal.

Under the leadership of founding editor Dr Thomas J Billard (Northwestern University) and an all-star, all-trans editorial board from across the globe, the Bulletin publishes timely research focused on identifiable and pragmatic social, cultural, and political issues of relevance to transgender people, both at the individual and collective level. The journal welcomes research from diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, and from all contextual areas. (Read more about our Aims and Scope here.)

The Bulletin publishes three article types:

  • Original Articles: unsolicited full-length submissions that present well-developed conceptual/theoretical arguments and/or present analyses from one or more research studies.

  • Brief Reports: unsolicited short-form submissions that present single findings from individual research studies or present replications of previous research.

  • Book Reviews: solicited short essays that provide a summary and critical assessment of one or more recently published book(s) relevant to the work published in the Bulletin. If you are interested in submitting a review, please email a brief introductory message and copy of your CV to bulletin@appliedtransstudies.org.

Word limits for Original Articles range from 8,000 to 12,000 depending on content (see here), while Brief Reports may not exceed 3,500 words and Book Reviews may not exceed 3,500 words. (Full submission guidelines may be found here.)

We hope you will consider submitting your relevant manuscripts to the Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies, that you will register an account with us to serve as a peer reviewer (here), and that you will encourage your colleagues who may be interested in the journal to do the same.

If you have any inquiries about the journal or about potential submissions you would like to make, please email editor Thomas J Billard at bulletin@appliedtransstudies.org.
